An Update on Alabama’s Hemp Law and What It Means for Pets

When I first shared information about Alabama’s new hemp law, HB 445, I promised I would continue to keep everyone updated as we learned more and worked toward solutions. This is one of those updates.

I’ve actually been working on this issue since last year, but over the past several weeks I’ve become much more actively involved in trying to get clarification and push for change. I’ve been collaborating with another Alabama pet retailer to better understand how the law is being interpreted and what options may exist to correct the unintended consequences it created for pets.

As it currently stands, pets were included in the law without providing a clear legal pathway for pet-specific hemp-derived CBD products. This has left pet parents, retailers, and manufacturers without clear guidance on how these products can continue to exist in Alabama.

Because of this, we have started reaching out directly to legislators and state officials to explain the situation and advocate for a practical fix. The goal is simple: help lawmakers understand why pets need to be addressed differently under this law and work toward either a pet exemption or a responsible regulatory pathway.

These conversations are just beginning, but progress starts with awareness and communication.

How You Can Help

Join Our Facebook Group for Updates:

We created a Facebook group specifically for Alabama pet parents so we can keep everyone informed as this unfolds. In the group we share updates, explain what is happening, and provide instructions for those who want to help — including how to contact legislators and write letters to representatives.

Join here: Alabama Pet Hemp & CBD Updates

This group allows Alabama pet parents to stay informed, ask questions, and learn how they can help advocate for continued access to responsible hemp-derived options for pets.

Continue Signing and Sharing the Petition:

If you have not signed the petition yet, please consider adding your name.

Sign the petition here: https://www.change.org/p/amend-hb-445-don-t-strip-cbd-from-alabama-s-pets

Signing and sharing the petition helps demonstrate to lawmakers that Alabama pet parents are paying attention and that access to responsible hemp-derived options for pets matters.

Contact Your Representatives

One of the most helpful things pet parents can do right now is contact their state representatives and let them know this issue matters to you.

If you’re not sure who your representatives are, you can find them here: https://open.pluralpolicy.com/find_your_legislator/

If you would like more information or guidance on what to say, you can join the Facebook group above where we share updates and instructions for contacting legislators.

If you are not on Facebook, you are always welcome to email me directly (bloomdog.wellness@gmail.com) and I will gladly help point you in the right direction.

Thank You

I truly appreciate everyone who has reached out, asked questions, shared information, and offered support while we work through this.

I will continue sharing updates as we learn more and as conversations with lawmakers progress.

Even if you do not currently use CBD products for your pets, access matters. Many pet parents rely on these products as part of their animals’ wellness routines, and losing responsible access would affect thousands of pets across Alabama.

If you care about protecting access to responsible hemp-derived wellness options for pets in Alabama, please stay involved and help keep this conversation moving forward.

Together, we can make sure pets — and the people who care for them — are heard.
